Sap Rising in Sugar Maples, February 1, 2010

Several weeks ago–early January–I put my hands on a beautiful, big old Sugar Maple in the Morristown, NJ, USA, area.  The tree communicated to me that it was going to begin to push sap up around February 1st.  It's very cold right now but I believe that the trees know what they are talking about. The tree said it would be an early Spring with "a few bumps in the road."  That would mean it is waking up early.
Today, I was at the NOFA NJ Winter Conference.  I explained this to a participant.  She said: "Oh, yes!  A neighbor who makes Maple Syrup said he was going to begin tapping his trees on February 1st."
Confirmation of what the trees are telling me!
